Our team specializes in general thoracic surgery. Dr. Robert McKenna and Dr. Osita Onugha are well-established thoracic surgeons with extensive experience in the Southern California region. Dr. McKenna has been included in the America’s Top Doctors for Cancer list for thoracic surgery for 10 consecutive years. He has published more than 250 peer-reviewed articles and has authored two books and 48 book chapters on topics related to his specialty.

Services provided by St John’s Division of General Thoracic Surgery encompass all aspects of chest diseases. Our surgeons are well-recognized leaders in Thoracic Surgery nationally and internationally. Our patients come from all over the world to have their operation with our team. Surgeons from over 40 countries have visited our team to learn our techniques for minimally invasive surgery. We have run over 100 advanced VATS courses for thoracic surgeons around the world and developed minimally invasive techniques to perform chest operations for the last 25 years. Our surgeons’ publications, includes 2 books, over 250 articles in medical journals, and over 50 book chapters. For the last several years, we have seen more new patients with lung cancer than any other program in California and have the largest volume in the world with video-assisted thoracic surgical (VATS) lobectomy for lung cancer.
About Robert McKenna, MD
Robert McKenna, M.D., is a board-certified thoracic surgeon who pioneered minimally invasive lung cancer surgery (specifically VATS). He has taught many thoracic surgeons around the world how to perform this surgery. With nearly 30 years of experience, Dr. McKenna is well-respected in the medical community for his clinical and research contributions. He is affiliated with Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, CA and Providence Medical Institute. Prior to joining Providence Medical Institute, Dr. McKenna served as clinical chief of general thoracic surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
About Osita Onugha, MD, MBA
Osita Onugha, M.D., is a board-certified surgeon and assistant professor of thoracic surgery at the John Wayne Cancer Institute. Dr. Onugha practices all aspects of thoracic surgery, including procedures for benign and malignant conditions of the lung, esophagus and mediastinum. He has a particular interest in minimally invasive techniques that leave small scars, and has extensive experience in treating thoracic surgical conditions using video-assisted thoracoscopic surgical (VATS), robotic assisted thoracic surgery (RATS), laparoscopic and bronchoscopic approaches. He is affiliated with Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, CA and Providence Medical Institute.
